5. In foster care or aged out of foster care; or

7. Subject to the juvenile or adult justice system; or

Melwood provides increased access to and participation in job readiness and employment services for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients living in Alexandria City and Arlington County.

Program services are aimed at removing and/or mitigating barriers that have negatively impacted program participants with disabilities to receive support, secure employment, maintain employment, and develop economic security.

Melwood JOBS is available for individuals who are receiving TANF or have been recipients of TANF in the last 24 months

Individual must fall into one of the following categories: Individual has a documented disability or is willing to be accessed for a disability; Individual has been unemployed for 6 months or more; Individual has had 2 or more jobs in the last 6 months; and/or Individual has 6 months or less remaining on their TANF benefits.

The top three services provided to JOBS participants are

SCSEP is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and is one of three federal workforce development programs that does not overlap with any other similar program.

To be eligible for SCSEP, you must be:

• 55 or older
• Unemployed
• Living on a family income of no more than 125% of the federal poverty level (if you’re not sure, contact a local SCSEP office)

To apply, simply find your local SCSEP office to complete an application. If you’re eligible and there is no waiting list, you will be enrolled to work at a training site.

Training and work:

Participants will be trained in all the skills needed to do the job such as

• Child care provider
• Customer service representative
• Teachers’ aide
• Computer technician
• Building maintenance worker
• Health care worker

Participants will work an average of 20 hours a week and earn whichever is highest—the federal, state, or local minimum wage. Most participants are with SCSEP for about six months before we help them find a more permanent job.

Rehabilitation Program

Eligibility Criteria for Vocational Rehabilitation Program when all six (6) of the following federal criteria are met.

1. US Citizen, or Non-US citizen who has provided documentation of legal eligibility to work in the US.
2. Have a physical or mental disability documented by a qualified professional.
3. The physical or mental impairment constitutes or results in a substantial barrier to employment.
4. The individual is presumed can benefit in terms of an employment outcome from the provision of VR services.
5. Individual live or work in Virginia. Includes living at a Virginia School.
6. VR Counselor determines that VR services are required to prepare for, secure, retain or advance in employment.

Transition and Education Services assist students and youth in the movement from school to the world of work and adult life. DRS works together with students, youth, families, schools and community agencies and organizations to provide services that lead to a successful transition from school to work.

Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS):help afford students with disabilities the support to increase their independence and their awareness of themselves, opportunities available in and through the world of work, and pathways to achieve personal and professional success.

To qualify for benefits, Client must have earned enough wages in covered employment during the base period.

To qualify for benefits, an individual must have earned at least a total of $3,000 in two quarters in the base period.

The “Regular Base Period” comprises the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters preceding a claim’s effective date.

Client must be able to work and be available for work.

To provide assistance/information for filing unemployment claims.

• An individual has two options when filing a claim for unemployment.
• 12-26 weeks on eligibility.
• Must meet weekly eligibility criteria.
• Weekly earning - Minimum $60 to maximum $378

Once an individual has filed an initial claim for unemployment, he/she has 5 days to register in the Virginia Workforce Connection (VaWC). This can only be done over the internet at www.vawc.virginia.gov.

The VaWC is a tool used to aid job seekers in finding employment. In addition, the VaWC is used for reporting purposes to Richmond and Department of Labor.

VEC will host hiring events as well as workshops on various topics.
